Photo Essay: Magellanic Plover

A rare & poorly known species!

Magellanic Plover (Pluvianellus socialis) is a rare & unique wader. It is in its own family, as it is more closely related to Sheathbills than true Plovers. It is found only in southern Patagonia where it breeds on saline & freshwater lakes. Population is not precisely known but thought to be between 1500 - 7,000 birds. It is extremely local & often absent from what would seem to be suitable areas..

Four birds were present.

Immature

This species winters on the coast, mainly to the south of this location. Although a few birds are found further north each year. The Valdez Peninsula around 300 kms south of Las Grutas, is a stronghold for wintering birds.

I went back to the site the next day & six birds were present. However, poor light & rain stopped me getting any decent photos.
