Lanner: Photo Essay

Lanner

Lanner (Falco biarmicus) enjoys a wide distribution across both Africa & Asia. It is primarily a bird of the wide open spaces, steppes, semi arid deserts & true deserts are where this species is at its highest densities. However, more recently, in some parts of Africa this species is nesting on high rise buildings in the middle of major cities.

The Kalahari is ideal habitat for this species.

In southern Africa, this species is commoner in the more arid western regions. It needs rocky ledges, old trees or even pylons for breeding & it hunts over wide open spaces. It is a specialist bird hunter, often ambushing birds as they come to drink at waterholes.

These birds pair for life & are strongly bound
to their territory.

Nice to spend some time with this pair.

This species is a winter nester here.
Young are being fed in spring when
 their prey is most abundant.

This is the female, which is larger
than the male.
