Photo Essay: Dune Lark

Dune Lark

Dune Lark habitat close to Rooibank, Walvis Bay.

This ultra specialised species is thinly distributed throughout the Namib Desert. It is Namibas's only true endemic, as the other 15 species just creep over the border into neighboring countries, particularly Angola.

This individual responded well to a tape of its call.

It feeds & lives on thinly grassed sand dunes & is usually found alone or in pairs. It is closely related to both Karoo & Barlow's Larks.

Will sing from any available perch
 or from the ground.

Shy & quick moving among the dune grasses.

There is still disagreement among taxonomists
over the true status of this species
& Karoo & Barlow Larks.
