Photo Essay: Pied Kingfisher

Pied Kingfisher (Ceryle rudis) is a common bird across much of Africa, tied to all kinds of waterways. Here in the Kruger/Sabie Park area it is a bird of rivers & dams. The following took place at the Biyimati Weir in Kruger, one of my favourite spots for just sitting around & seeing what happens!

Normal so far!

Thought it was going for the usual fish!

It speared a huge frog!

Large prey for such a small bird though!

A bit premature to try & eat it!

Try again!

A bit more beating required!

Even though the frog was dead,
it proved a bit of a task this one!

A bit more beating needed!

After this little show, it flew off with its prey & I never saw if it finally did get its meal! A great little cameo show though!
